Which Direction Is Best for a Calgary Home?

1 min read

Reviewed October 2026. Orientation affects sunlight, shade, heat, snow and how rooms are used, but there is no universally best direction.

Evaluate the actual home

Visit at different times of day. Check the direction of the backyard and main living spaces, window size, trees, neighbouring buildings, blinds, insulation, air conditioning, driveway slope and snow-clearing needs.

Balance trade-offs

South-facing rooms may receive more winter sun but more summer heat. West-facing spaces can have afternoon sun. East-facing spaces receive morning light. North-facing spaces may receive less direct sun. The floor plan and shading can matter more than the label.

This is general planning information, not an energy audit or guarantee of comfort.
