Alberta Rental Deposits: Current Basics

1 min read

Reviewed October 2026. Alberta's residential-tenancy rules apply to Alberta rentals. Other provinces have different deposit rules.

Security deposit

A landlord generally cannot collect more than one month's rent as a security deposit. The applicable prescribed interest rate and trust-account requirements should be confirmed from current Alberta sources.

Inspections and deductions

Written move-in and move-out inspection requirements matter. Keep signed reports, photos, receipts and the landlord's itemized statement. Disputes may be taken to the appropriate Alberta process.

Do not copy other provinces

Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec have different rules for deposits, interest and return timelines. A provincial comparison is only a starting point, not legal advice.
