Calgary Home Winter Preparation Checklist

Reviewed October 2026. Before winter, clear gutters and downspouts, inspect the roof and chimney, drain exposed outdoor water lines, check exterior cracks and trim branches near the home.

Heating and safety

Have fuel-burning equipment checked by a qualified professional when needed. Replace or clean filters according to the equipment instructions, keep furnace areas clear and test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms. Keep exterior intake and exhaust vents clear of snow and ice.

Humidity and windows

Indoor humidity needs vary by home, windows and outdoor temperature. Use a hygrometer, follow the equipment manufacturer's guidance and reduce humidity if condensation or frost appears. Do not treat a general humidity table as a guarantee.

When away

Keep the home heated as appropriate, protect water lines and arrange monitoring during extended absences. Use qualified tradespeople for gas, electrical, chimney, roofing or plumbing work.
