Buy or Rent? A Calgary Homeownership Comparison
Reviewed October 2026. Buying or renting is a personal decision. Compare the full monthly cost, how long you expect to stay, your savings habits, job plans, maintenance responsibilities and your tolerance for market and interest-rate changes.
Owning a home
Ownership may build equity and provide control over renovations and use of the home. It also brings mortgage interest, property tax, insurance, utilities, repairs, maintenance, selling costs and money tied up in the property. Home values can rise or fall, and short-term ownership is not guaranteed to produce a profit.
Renting a home
Renting can provide flexibility and may reduce responsibility for major repairs. It does not automatically mean money is wasted: the comparison depends on rent, investment of savings, moving costs, taxes, insurance and how long you stay.
Compare the numbers carefully
A comparison should use the same type and location of home, realistic rent and ownership costs, mortgage assumptions, down payment, investment returns, taxes, inflation, selling costs and moving frequency. A projection is not a promise. Change one assumption and the result may change.
Practical questions
Will you actually save or invest the monthly difference? Can you stay long enough to spread out purchase and sale costs? Would the payment remain manageable after renewal or a change in income? A mortgage professional, financial planner and real estate professional can help with separate parts of the decision.
